Overview
About this Spot
Lowlands Beach is a surf spot located in South West Australia, Australia, within the City of Albany in the Great Southern region. This spot is nestled along the Southern Ocean, west of the West Cape Howe National Park and southeast of Wilson Inlet. The area is on the traditional land of the Minang people of the Noongar nation. Lowlands Beach is known for its rocky and sandy bottom, providing both left and right waves, and it is suitable for intermediate surfers. The waves here are generally less than 50 meters in length, and the spot is typically uncrowded, offering a peaceful surfing experience. Surfers should be cautious of rips and undertows, as well as the presence of rocks and sharks. It’s important to keep an eye on your position, as currents can drag you in front of the rocks, especially when a set comes in. The spot can be a good option when other nearby spots are closing out, thanks to its consistent bank off the point. It’s particularly fun when the swell is small. To reach Lowlands Beach, drive west from Albany along Lower Denmark Road and turn into Lowlands Road about 30 kilometers from Albany, following it to the end. From the car park, hike around the rocks to the second bay where a nice left breaks off the rocky point. Occasionally, there is also a right-hander coming off the point in the first bay. Nearby surf spots include Muttonbird Island, Ocean Beach, Miserys, Punchbowls, and The Right. When surfing at Lowlands Beach, it’s crucial to check your skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Always be mindful of surf etiquette, especially in crowded spots. Respect the locals.
