Overview
About this Spot
Fort Le Marchant is a surf spot located in Channel Islands, United Kingdom. This spot features a left-hand wave that typically breaks over a boulder bottom. It is primarily suitable for intermediate surfers due to the conditions that can arise. The wave length ranges from 50 to 150 meters. Fort Le Marchant generally works during large winter storms that produce sufficient swell to wrap into the sheltered northerly facing bay. It rarely breaks on large ground swells. The predominant southwest winds during these storms usually result in offshore conditions, making it more favorable for surfing. The best time to surf here is around mid-tide on a falling tide, as the wave quality diminishes at low tide. Access to the water is via a small gully located below the car park, and paddling out is facilitated by a rip that runs parallel to the point through the take-off zone. The waves start to break at around the 5-foot mark near a group of rocks that become exposed as the tide drops. The initial section of the wave is characterized by a powerful and hollow wall, allowing for a few maneuvers before it slows and flattens out further out into the channel. Surfers should remain vigilant of the outside, as sets can be obscured by the rocks around the headland and can arrive unexpectedly. The spot is generally empty, providing a peaceful surfing experience amidst beautiful rugged scenery. However, local opinions vary; some believe the spot is overrated, while others find it offers a unique opportunity to experience powerful waves that are not commonly found in Guernsey. The site is located on the east side of the Fort Le Marchant headland. To reach it, park in the car park atop the small cliff overlooking the break, while keeping to the right on common land. Be aware that car access can sometimes be restricted due to a gun range situated at the fort adjacent to the break. Fort Le Marchant is known for its rips and undertow, and it is advisable to be cautious when entering the water. It is important to assess your skill level against the difficulty of the waves before entering the water. Always check the surf etiquette when surfing at crowded spots. Respect the locals.
