Dungeons is a surf spot located in Cape Town, South Africa, near Hout Bay. The spot is known for its powerful and challenging waves, with some reaching up to 60 feet during big swells. Dungeons is suitable only for experienced surfers and is considered one of the most demanding surf spots in the world. The bottom is rocky, and the spot works on all tides. The surf spot provides right waves. The main peaks at Dungeons include The Slab, which is the deepest section and can barrel during small swells and high tides; The Two-Point-Five, also called Photo Bowl, which is 2.5 meters deep and is the widest section; Washburn’s Peak, an outside deep take-off zone with some of the biggest waves; Outside Photo Bowl, which features the largest waves during XXL swells; and The Left, a peak that rarely breaks and is surfed in marginal conditions. Access to Dungeons is usually by boat or jet ski from Hout Bay Harbour, with the trip taking about 15 minutes. Paddling out is possible but takes more than 20 minutes. The water is cold, and there are thick kelp beds and abundant sea life, including sharks. The best time to surf Dungeons is during the winter months from May to August, when the swells are strongest. The spot sometimes breaks and has a wave length of 50 to 150 meters. Crowds are usually small, but when the spot is busy, respect the locals and check the surf etiquette. Always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Dungeons has hosted the Red Bull Big Wave Africa competition, attracting top surfers.
