About this Spot

Llandudno is a surf spot located in Cape Town, South Africa. The beach sits on the Atlantic seaboard of the Cape Peninsula and is known for its white sand, clear water, and large granite boulders. The surf here breaks over a sandy bottom and is best during summer and spring when the sandbanks are set and the swell comes from the southwest. The spot provides both left and right waves. There are three main peaks at Llandudno. The right-hand peak near the rocks, called The Gat, can offer wedging take-offs and thick barrels when the banks and swell line up. The central peak can also get good, and there is a left on the far side that sometimes breaks for short rides. The waves are powerful and hollow, and the water is cold even in summer, but most surfers do not wear hoods. Llandudno is a popular spot for both surfing and bodyboarding, and it gets crowded on weekends, especially with younger surfers from the area. Local surfers often sit at The Gat when conditions are good. Respect the locals, especially when the spot is crowded, and always follow surf etiquette. If you drop in on someone, expect to hear about it from the regulars. The spot is considered a nursery for many young surfers, but there are only a few locals who are protective of their waves. The beach is patrolled by lifeguards in summer. There are no shops or commercial activities nearby, and the area is quiet. Access is via a drive over Suikerbossie Hill from Hout Bay or along Victoria Road from Camps Bay, with steps leading down from the parking lot to the beach. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. For the latest surf forecast, report, map, and webcam, check local surf resources.
