About this Spot

Sunset Beach is a surf spot located in North Carolina (USA), on a small barrier island near the South Carolina border and close to Calabash and Little River. The spot is known for its sandy bottom and is suitable for all levels, with conditions that are good for beginners on smaller days, especially when there is no hurricane activity. The main peaks are near the pier and at the west end of the island. The pier area is often the most consistent for waves, and you can park at the pier access if you want to surf there, or at the west end if you prefer that section. The spot provides both left and right waves. The best swell comes from the southeast and south, with a minimum swell height of two feet needed for decent surf. The best wind direction is from the northwest or north. The surf is regular, with wave lengths usually less than 50 meters. The tide works best at low and medium levels. On small days, beginners can use softboards, longboards, or other beginner-friendly boards, while more experienced surfers can use shortboards or mid-length boards when the swell is up. During hurricane season, the tides and currents can become hazardous, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Rips and undertow can be present, especially during bigger swells. The island is laid back and quiet, and you can drive across it in about ten minutes, but access is via a one-way bridge that can take time to cross. Parking is limited and local authorities are strict about parking and surfing too close to the pier, with fines possible, so pay attention to signs and rules. There is one surf shop on the main street. Respect the locals, especially when the spot is crowded, and always check the surf etiquette. Nearby surf spots include Bird Island, Ocean Isle, Cherry Grove Pier, Holden Beach, and Captain’s Cove.
