Overview
About this Spot
Ghost Tree is a surf spot located in Central Coast, California. The spot provides right waves. Ghost Tree is known for its powerful barrels that can reach heights of up to 60 feet during rare winter swells. The surf break is situated off the rocky shoreline of Pescadero Point in Pebble Beach, near the 18th hole of the Pebble Beach Golf Links. The spot got its name from the white and gnarled Monterey Cypress trees in the area. Ghost Tree is considered one of the most dangerous surf spots in the world due to its slab shape, massive boils, strong currents, bull kelp, and underwater rock formations. The spot has a boulder bottom and is suitable only for professional surfers. The wave length ranges from 150 to 300 meters. Ghost Tree is typically uncrowded. Nearby surf spots include Carmel, Asilomar, The Wharf, Lovers Point, and Del Monte Beach. The spot is known for its epic wave quality. Access to Ghost Tree is by boat or jet ski only. The area is known for cold water and the presence of sharks. It’s important to note that Ghost Tree only breaks on perfect swell conditions, which occur very rarely. In the early 1960s, Fred Van Dyke was among the first to surf the wave. In 2007, local surfer Peter Davi tragically lost his life at Ghost Tree during a massive swell. Following this incident, regulations were implemented prohibiting the use of personal watercraft in the area, effectively making tow-in surfing illegal at this spot. Despite its current inaccessibility, Ghost Tree remains a topic of interest in the surfing community. Always check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Remember to respect the locals and follow surf etiquette.
