About this Spot

Caerhays is a surf spot located in Cornwall, United Kingdom. The spot features an a-frame wave direction and a sandy bottom, making it suitable for surfers of all experience levels. The wave length is less than 50 meters, and it typically attracts a few surfers, resulting in a less crowded atmosphere. Caerhays works best in the winter months, particularly under conditions similar to those at Pentewan, but it generally picks up more swell, often being twice the size of Pentewan. The surf conditions can vary significantly between high and low tide. Low tide can produce good long waves, primarily lefts, while high tide offers a hollow reform shorebreak and fun waves outside, with a useful rip on the right side. However, between high and low tide, the surf quality usually diminishes. The waves break a considerable distance out, regardless of size, and strong rips are present, which surfers should be cautious of. The spot is characterized by cliffs on either side covered in woods that descend to the beach. Behind the car park, there is a large castle with grounds and a lake, and a Second World War gun turret is located in the corner of the car park. The area is scenic, but reaching Caerhays requires navigating narrow, winding lanes, so it is advisable to follow signs to Veryan and then Caerhays. Parking is available in the car park overlooking the break. Surfing etiquette is essential, especially in crowded conditions, and it is crucial to assess your skill level against the difficulty of the waves before entering the water. Respect the locals.
