Overview
About this Spot
Shark Reef is a surf spot located on the Ionian Coast of Greece, near the town of Preveza in the northwest of the country. The spot is about 4 kilometers from Preveza, close to the Kalamitsi Hotel, with the break sitting roughly 100 meters in front of the hotel. Shark Reef is an exposed reef break with a flat rock bottom, and the waves here are lefts. The spot is not suitable for beginners, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot matches your level. The wave length usually ranges from 50 to 150 meters, and on good days it can reach up to 300 meters. You need to paddle about 50 meters from the shore to reach the wave. The spot works at all tides and is best surfed with a southwest or west swell and offshore winds from the northeast or east. The minimum swell height for the spot to break is about 2 feet. The water temperature is usually around 23°C, so a shorty or summer wetsuit is enough for most surfers. The area is rarely crowded, but when there are more people in the water, respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette. Parking is available right in front of the spot, making access easy. Boards that work well here include shortboards, mid-lengths, and retro boards. The spot is considered a regional classic and is mainly for intermediate and advanced surfers. Near Shark Reef, you can also find other surf spots like Kastrosikia, Tsoukalades, Stonebread, Ligia Reef, and Preveza. There have been no confirmed shark attacks in the Ionian Sea, and the species found here are not considered dangerous to humans. Always check the forecast and local conditions before heading out.
