Plakoto is a surf spot located in the Islands region of Greece. This spot is characterized by both left and right waves, making it versatile for surfers. The sea bottom consists of sand and rocks, and the wave quality is generally described as sloppy. The waves at Plakoto are less than 50 meters in length, and the spot is known for being uncrowded, often empty. Surfers of all experience levels can enjoy this spot, but it’s important to check your skills before paddling out to ensure the conditions match your surfing level. The surf spot is accessible by car, and you can park almost directly on the beach. The waves typically break on the left side when facing the sea, with some waves breaking in the middle of the bay when the swell is larger. The water is clear and blue, providing a beautiful backdrop for your surfing session. Plakoto is not typically a destination for a dedicated surf trip, but if you’re in the area, it’s worth checking out. The journey from Piraeus (Athens) to the port of Ios takes about 3 hours and 15 minutes by superfast ferry or around 7 hours by regular ferry. From the port of Ios, it’s about a 40-minute drive to Plakoto beach, including a 15-minute stretch on a dirt road, which is best navigated with a 4×4 vehicle. Once in the Chora, follow the signs to Plakoto, and where the road ends, take the dirt road leading to the sea. Remember to respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette when surfing crowded spots. Respect the locals.
