Overview
About this Spot
Jap Rock is a surf spot located in Atlantic Coast, Florida. The spot provides both left and right waves. Jap Rock features a reef break with a bottom composed of sand and rocks. The waves can range from 50 to 150 meters in length. This spot is suitable for surfers of all experience levels, from beginners to advanced. The tide conditions that work best for surfing at Jap Rock are low and medium. Typically, the crowd at this spot is relatively empty, offering a more relaxed surfing experience. Nearby surf spots include Spanish River, Boca Inlet, Delray Beach, Deerfield Beach Pier, and Boynton. To access Jap Rock, surfers can park on 40th Street or at Spanish River Park public beach. From there, it’s about a 12-minute walk or 5-minute jog north along the beach to reach the spot. The rocky reef extends from the beach into the water, creating the surf break. When surfing at Jap Rock, you’ll notice what appears to be a private beach club house to the south, while the area to the north is part of Highland Beach, characterized by nice houses and private beaches. The spot offers a mellow atmosphere, but it’s important to be aware of your surroundings due to the presence of rocks. Always check your skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions match your surfing level. Remember to respect the locals and follow surf etiquette, especially if the spot becomes crowded. For the best surf conditions, autumn, particularly November, often provides clean, surfable waves. East swells combined with offshore winds from the west-northwest typically produce the highest quality waves at Jap Rock. Water temperatures remain warm year-round, ranging from 22°C (72°F) in February to 30°C (86°F) in August, allowing for comfortable surfing in board shorts and rash vests throughout the year. It’s worth noting that the name ‘Jap Rock’ is derived from the early 20th century when the Yamato Colony farmed in the area. The spot is located near the former Spanish River, which has since been largely transformed into part of the Intracoastal Waterway. Today, remnants of the old river can still be seen in Spanish River Park and at the Gumbo Limbo Environmental Complex.
