About this Spot

S-Turns is a surf spot located in North Carolina, USA Southeast. It’s situated just north of Rodanthe at the southern end of Pea Island, along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The spot is accessed via a winding stretch of Pea Island Road. S-Turns provides both left and right waves. This beach break is known for its powerful, hollow waves that form over a sandy bottom. The spot works best during low and medium tides, with a rising tide being particularly favorable. S-Turns is considered a regional classic and is best suited for intermediate surfers. The waves are typically less than 50 meters in length. The spot can get extremely crowded during warm months when there are waves, but the vibe is generally friendly. Winter surfing is possible, but water temperatures can drop to the low 40s. Parking has become limited due to recent construction, so surfers should park along the road and walk over the sand dunes to reach the waves. When surfing here, be aware of potential hazards such as urchins, rips, undertow, and sharks. The spot’s name comes from the road’s S-shaped turns near the break. S-Turns is part of the Outer Banks, considered one of the best surfing areas on the East Coast. Nearby spots include Rhodanthe Pier, New Inlet, Boiler, Outer Banks Beach Club, and Nags Head. The best season for surfing at S-Turns depends on storm activity, with tropical cyclones in late summer and fall, and nor’easters in late fall and winter. Remember to respect the locals and follow surf etiquette, especially when the spot is crowded. Always check your skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions match your surfing level.
