About this Spot

Montara is a surf spot located in Bay Area, California. The spot provides both left and right waves. Montara Beach is a mile-long stretch of sand facing the Pacific Ocean, accessible via two parking lots along Highway 1. The surf spot offers a consistent beach break with powerful waves, especially during larger swells. It’s known for its strong rip currents and can be challenging to paddle out. On big days, the waves can be formidable, comparable to some of the largest along the coast. The spot is less crowded compared to other local beaches, providing surfers with ample space. However, it’s important to respect the locals and follow surf etiquette, especially when the spot gets busy. Montara has a sand bottom and can be surfed at all tides. It’s suitable for intermediate surfers and offers a ride length of 150-300 meters. The spot is considered a regional classic in terms of wave quality. Nearby surf spots include Gray Whale Cove, Linda Mar, Pedro Point, Rockaway Beach, and Mavericks. When the waves are big, Montara is known as ‘mini-mavericks’ due to its heavy conditions. Be cautious of rips, undertow, and the presence of sharks in the area. Check your skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions match your surfing level. Parking is available on the cliff lot, with additional parking at the Chart House at the end of the beach. The local vibe is generally mellow, but can be intense if you drop in on others. On smaller days (3-4 ft and under), Montara can be suitable for beginners. However, when it’s big, it’s for experts only, featuring walls that can lead to broken boards. The spot is located off Highway 1, a few miles past Devils Slide when leaving Pacifica. Montara Beach is also popular for activities such as beach walking, fishing, and tidepooling. Dogs are allowed on-leash, and the park is open from 8 a.m. to sunset. Facilities include parking, restrooms, and trails leading to the beach. Remember to check the surf forecast, report, and map before your visit. A webcam may be available to view current conditions.
