About this Spot

The Wedge is a surf spot located in Bay Area, California. The spot provides left waves. It’s known for its large, powerful waves that can reach up to 30 feet during optimal conditions. The Wedge is situated at the southeastern end of the Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach. The unique wave formation results from the reflection of south or south-southwest swells off the Newport Harbor jetty, creating a wedging effect that produces steep, hollow waves breaking close to the shore. The beach has a steep sand bottom, leading to strong backwash that can create additional waves, making surf conditions unpredictable and challenging. This combination of factors makes The Wedge primarily suited for advanced surfers and bodysurfers. The spot is also popular among spectators. The best conditions typically occur during summer and fall months. There are two wedges, one that works at high tide and another at low tides. The low tide break is at the far east end of the beach, where waves reflect off rocks, creating barrels and opportunities for aerial maneuvers. The high tide break is about 50 feet west up the beach, offering fewer barrels but good aerials. The Wedge breaks almost year-round, with waist-high waves at Steamers Lane indicating good conditions here. Parking is available along West Cliff Drive. The spot is located about 1/4 to 1/2 mile west up West Cliff Drive after Steamer Lane, near two dog beaches. Nearby spots include Steamer Lane, Cowells Cove, Mitchell’s Cove, Murph Bar, and Natural Bridges. The Wedge is considered a regional classic and can get crowded. Remember to respect locals and follow surf etiquette. Check your skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions match your surfing level. Always be aware of the local conditions and exercise caution due to the strong backwash and potential hazards.
