Overview
About this Spot
Moffats is a surf spot located in Queensland, Australia, within the coastal suburb of Moffat Beach in the Sunshine Coast Region. Known for its right-hand wave direction, Moffats offers a variety of surfing experiences suitable for all levels of surfers. The spot features a boulder bottom and can be surfed at all tides, making it a regional classic. The wave length is typically less than 50 meters, and while it can get crowded, especially on good days and weekends, it remains a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Moffats is easily accessible with a short walk to the headland, and the easiest way to get out is to jump off the rocks, although caution is advised on big days. The spot is known for its localism, so respecting the locals and adhering to surf etiquette is crucial. The area is also known for its occasional shark sightings, so surfers should remain vigilant. Moffats can be surfed with longboards on mid to high tide, while shortboards are better suited for low tide when the swell is larger. The wave can break further out on a different ledge, creating a fast and heavy barrel section. Surfers should be cautious of the random shelves that pop up at the cove on small days and be aware of their position at the reef on big days, as large sets can come through unexpectedly. The surf spot is part of a headland that includes other breaks, such as a heavy and shallow righthander south of the point and a nice righthander just north of it. Moffats itself is the most common place to surf, offering rides over 200 meters or more. The shorebreak, known as the shory, is an extremely heavy wave mostly surfed by bodyboarders. The Cove, located between Dicky Beach and Moffats, is a rocky, shallow, and hollow spot. The Reef, about 200 meters out from the cove, is a perfect reef break that can be compared to famous spots like Pipeline or Teahupoo on a good day. Moffat Beach is protected from southerly winds by Moffat Headland, providing a sought-after surf break. The area hosts one of Australia’s longest-running surf competitions, the Pa and Ma Bendall Surfing Classic, held every Easter in honor of local surfing legends. When visiting Moffats, it’s important to check your skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions match your surfing level. Respect the locals.
