About this Spot

Hunchies Bay is a surf spot located in South West Australia and is known for its waves that break over a mix of sand and rocks. The wave starts on a shallow, irregular rock bottom and can lose power as it moves toward the sand and rock shore break. Sometimes the shore break can get heavy, but most of the time it is softer. The spot provides both left and right waves. Hunchies Bay is accessible by walking about 10 meters from the Hunchies car park to the lookout, then looking right of the bay to find the point where the waves break. The spot is popular and often crowded, especially on weekends, with a strong local presence. Localism is common, and bodyboarders may find it difficult to get waves due to the local vibe and the way the lineup works. The spot is suitable for all levels, but beginners should stick to smaller days and use beginner boards or softboards, while more experienced surfers can use shortboards, mid-lengths, or retro boards. The wave length is usually less than 50 meters. The spot works on all tides and is very consistent. The best swell direction is from the southwest, west, or northwest, with a minimum swell height of 2 feet. The best wind direction is from the east, southeast, or south. Nearby surf spots include Caves, Sidewinders, Sucky Lefts, Dotties, and Roberts Point. When the spot is crowded, respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions match your level. Surfers are encouraged to keep the beach clean and respect the local vibe to enjoy their session.
