Overview
About this Spot
Timber Island is a surf spot located in Maine, USA Northeast. The spot sits off the coast of Goose Rocks Beach in Biddeford and is known for its remote and rarely surfed reef break. To get there, you need to launch a boat or kayak from Goose Rocks Beach and travel about half a mile to the island, then anchor your boat roughly 200 meters from the break and paddle in. The bottom is made up of boulders and the wave is a hollow left that breaks over a reef, with rides ranging from 150 to 300 meters. The best conditions for Timber Island are a southeast, east, or south swell, northwest or north wind, and a low to mid rising tide. The minimum swell height for the spot to work is 5 feet. The spot is not good for beginners and is best for intermediate and advanced surfers who are comfortable with hazards like sharp rocks, sea urchins, rip currents, and man-made dangers such as buoys. Boards that work well here include shortboards, mid-lengths, and retro boards. The wave breaks only rarely and you will usually find very few people in the water. If you want to park, you can leave your car at Goose Rocks Beach and walk about a mile down the beach to launch your boat or kayak. Access by foot to Timber Island is only possible at low tide, and there is a tide clock at the Timber Point Trailhead to help you time your visit. Nearby surf spots include Kennebunk Beach, Wells Beach, Higgins Beach, Ogunquit Beach, and Ogunquit Rivermouth. Always respect the locals, especially if the spot is crowded, and check the surf etiquette. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot matches your level.
