Overview
About this Spot
Sidewinders is a surf spot located in South West Australia, specifically in Halls Head, Mandurah. The spot is found off Halls Head Parade, just past the boat ramp. To get to the break, walk about 100 meters from the car park. The spot is secluded and features a mix of coral reef and sand on the bottom, with rocks present, so be careful when entering and exiting the water. The spot provides both left and right waves. The wave can offer a long ride, especially if you start further left and catch the wave as it wraps around the sand bank. Sometimes the waves move sideways, wrapping around the bank, and there can be a strong drift, so it’s often better to get out and walk back up the beach to paddle out again. The wave length ranges from 150 to 300 meters. Sidewinders works on all tides and is best surfed with a west or northwest swell and an east or southeast wind. The minimum swell height for the spot to break is about 2 feet. The spot is not very consistent. The crowd is usually moderate, but it can get busier on weekends. Boards commonly used here include shortboards, mid-lengths, and retro boards. The spot is considered a regional classic and is best suited for intermediate and advanced surfers. It is not recommended for beginners due to the rocks, drift, and wave power. Check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot matches your level. Always respect the locals, especially when the spot is crowded, and make sure to follow surf etiquette. Nearby surf spots include Caves, Roberts Point, Dotties, Hunchies Bay, and Sucky Lefts.
