Overview
About this Spot
South Point is a surf spot located in South West Australia, Australia. This surf spot is situated on the south side of Cowaramup Bay, making it easily accessible with a carpark overlooking the break and a short 200-meter walk down to the rocks. The wave at South Point is a regional classic, breaking left over a boulder bottom. It is suitable for intermediate surfers, with wave lengths ranging from 50 to 150 meters. The spot is known for its crowded conditions, especially when the onshore winds hit. The wave requires a good-sized south to southwest swell to start working, and when it does, it breaks about 20 meters off the rocks near a hazardous niggerhead, which resembles an anti-ship mine. Surfers can enjoy a short, steep section from the takeoff, which then backs off into a long, lazy wall perfect for cutbacks. On bigger days, when the swell at Indicators reaches seven feet or more, South Point truly shines. The wave breaks up to 50 meters further out than usual, allowing surfers to ride straight in at the bombie and bottom turn into a full stand-up barrel. However, caution is needed as the barrel tends to collapse at the end, requiring surfers to exit before continuing on the long section. The impact zone can be heavy, and the rocks are close, so it’s important to be cautious if caught inside. South Point is one of the few spots in the area that can handle a southwest wind, as west to north winds tend to ruin other breaks. The surf spot is located near other popular spots like Huzzas, North Point Gracetown, Cobblestones, Cow Bombie, and Lefthanders. When planning a surf session at South Point, it’s essential to check the surf forecast, report, and map to ensure optimal conditions. Additionally, checking the webcam can provide real-time insights into the current surf conditions. Surfers should always respect the locals and be mindful of the surf etiquette, especially in crowded spots. Before paddling out, it’s crucial to check your skills to ensure the spot and conditions match your surfing level. Respect the locals.
