Butterbox

Butterbox is a surf spot located in New South Wales, Australia. Known for its left-hand waves, this spot is ideal for intermediate surfers looking for a challenge. The wave quality is considered world-class, and it breaks over a coral reef and sand bottom. The best conditions for surfing at Butterbox are during low to medium tides. The waves can hold up to 10 feet, but they tend to break wide and are not at their best at this size. The spot is relatively quiet, but it can feel eerie, especially late in the afternoon when the howling noises from the barrel can be heard. Surfers should be cautious of the rips and undertows, as well as the presence of rocks and urchins. It’s advisable to wear booties and avoid surfing alone during early mornings or late at night due to the risk of sharks. Access to Butterbox is through the Long Reef Golf Course, past the golf club, and following the road to the top where the break can be checked on the south side of the headland. The paddle out takes more than 20 minutes, or alternatively, you can reach it by boat. The wave length ranges from 50 to 150 meters, and the spot is generally uncrowded.
