Overview
About this Spot
Cooks Island is a surf spot located in New South Wales, Australia. Known for its challenging conditions, this spot is not for the faint-hearted. The surf break is situated about 3/4 mile offshore, requiring a significant paddle through shark-infested waters to reach the island. The waves break close to the rocks, and the presence of Mary’s rock reefs can limit the size of the waves. The wave direction is predominantly right, and the sea bottom consists of boulders, making it essential for surfers to be cautious. The spot is best surfed at medium to high tide and is considered to offer normal wave quality. Due to the challenging conditions, it is recommended for intermediate surfers who are confident in their abilities. The wave length is typically less than 50 meters, and the spot is known for being relatively empty, as not many surfers make the paddle out. Nearby surf spots include Needle Dicks, Fingal Head, Dreamtime, Fingal Bomie, and End Wedge. To reach Cooks Island, surfers can turn off the Pacific Highway south of Tweed Heads to Fingal Head and park at the main beach car park. From there, it’s either a paddle of over 20 minutes or a boat ride to the island. It’s important to check the surf forecast and report before heading out, as the spot only sometimes breaks. Surfers should also be aware of the rips and undertow present in the area. Respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette when surfing crowded spots. Before paddling out, check your skills to ensure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level.
