Overview
About this Spot
Sakawa Rivermouth is a surf spot located in East Central Honshu, Japan, in the town of Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture, at the western end of Sagami Bay near the Izu Peninsula. The spot is accessible by car from Yokohama, about 53 kilometers west on Highway 1, or by train via the Shinkansen to Odawara Station, followed by a 20-minute walk to the beach. The surf break has a sandy bottom with some rocks and is known for its hollow, fast, and powerful waves. The spot provides both left and right waves. Sakawa Rivermouth works best during low and mid tides, with optimal conditions on rising and falling tides. The ideal swell direction is from the south or southwest, usually generated by typhoons or low pressure systems in the Philippine Sea, and the best wind is offshore from the north, northwest, or west. The wave length is usually less than 50 meters but can reach up to 300 meters on good days. Swell size ranges from 1.0 to 2.5 meters (3 to 8 feet). The spot is fickle and often flat, but it can get good during the summer and early fall, especially in typhoon season. The area can be crowded on smaller days, but when the surf is big, the crowd thins out. Localism is present, so respect the locals and always check the surf etiquette, especially when the spot is crowded. Rips and undertow can be strong, and the wave gets serious when overhead, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions match your level. Water temperatures range from about 14.3°C in March to 25.9°C in August, so a rashguard or thin wetsuit top is enough in summer, while a 3-4mm wetsuit is better in cooler months. Parking is available in a lot right on the beach. For the latest surf forecast, report, map, and webcam, check local surf resources before heading out.
