Overview
About this Spot
Onjuku is a surf spot located in East Central Honshu, Japan, on the Pacific side of Chiba Prefecture. The beach is crescent-shaped with white sand, rocky projections, and small harbors at both ends. The surf here is a beach break, with some waves forming along the harbor walls. The spot is divided into sections: Iwawada (north), river-mouth, chuo (center), cliffs, and Hama (portside). The bottom is sandy, and the surf is most consistent at low and medium tides. The spot provides both left and right waves. Waves are usually small to medium, but bigger swells can happen. The length of ride is generally less than 50 meters. The area is known for being consistent, and you can often find nice small surf in winter with fewer crowds. Onjuku is suitable for all levels, but always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. When the spot is crowded, respect the locals and follow surf etiquette. Man-made hazards like buoys may be present, so keep an eye out. The beach is popular in summer for sunbathing and parties, but there are usually only a few surfers in the water. Access is easy, with nearby parking and a short walk to the beach. Restaurants and minshuku-hotels are close by. You can reach Onjuku by car from Tokyo in about 2 hours via the Keiyo Road, Chiba-Togane Road, and National Road 128, or by train on the JR Chiba Keiyo Line, taking about 1 hour and 20 minutes. Nearby surf spots include Hebara, Katsuura, Taito, Torami, and Ichinomiya. For the latest surf forecast, report, map, and webcam, check local surf resources before heading out.
