Overview
About this Spot
Oarai is a surf spot located in East Central Honshu, Japan, in Ibaraki Prefecture. The spot sits along Oarai Sun Beach, which is the largest beach in the area, stretching about 1.2 kilometers. The bottom is sandy, and the waves are regular, with a length between 50 and 150 meters. The surf spot provides both left and right waves. Surfing here is best at medium and high tide. There are two long concrete wave breakers that extend about 100 meters into the sea, and the sand has built up around them, making it easier to paddle out on bigger days. The area is known for having few crowds, and there is no problem with localism, but always respect the locals and check the surf etiquette, especially when the spot is crowded. Surfing and swimming beaches are clearly separated. The spot is suitable for intermediate surfers, so check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot matches your level. The waves can be strong, especially near the southern end of the beach where there are submerged reefs, so be careful. The shore break is also powerful, so beginners should take care when entering the water. There are three surf shops on the beach, offering board and wetsuit rentals, as well as lessons for all levels. Facilities include free parking, restrooms, and showers. During the summer, lifeguards are present. To get to Oarai, take the Joban Highway, turn off at Tomobe Junction towards Oarai, exit at Mito-Oarai, and follow the signs to Oarai Sun Beach. The area also features an aquarium and the Oarai Isosaki Shrine. For the latest surf forecast, report, map, and webcam, check local surf resources before heading out.
