Overview
About this Spot
Doonloughan is a surf spot located in Connacht, Ireland. This surf spot features an a-frame wave direction and has a sandy bottom. It is suitable for surfers of all levels, making it accessible for beginners as well as more experienced surfers. The wave length is less than 50 meters, and the spot has a regular frequency of surfable waves. However, it is important to note that the surf can become crowded, with too many surfers often present in the water. The spot is known for its rips and undertow, particularly on the left side where a rip can take surfers straight out. While there are small waves close to the beach, caution is advised as there are often young learners in the area. The beach shape changes frequently, providing a different surfing experience almost daily. Larger waves can be found further out, but they can be challenging to reach due to the strength of the smaller waves. It is recommended to trust the rip for safe access to the main surfable areas. Doonloughan is located near the town of Clifden, which offers various accommodations including hotels, bed and breakfasts, and guest houses. There is also a camping option available with shelter provided by the dunes. Local amenities include a surf shop named Foain Tuath and a surf bar called Mullarky’s, which is part of the Foyles hotel. To reach Doonloughan, take the N59 from Galway City towards Clifden, follow the one-way traffic around the town, and head towards Ballyconneely on the R341. After approximately 9 kilometers, turn right towards the golf club and continue for about 2 kilometers before taking another right along a narrow road for an additional 2 to 3 kilometers until you arrive at the commons flats and sand dunes. Parking is available along the first track leading to the smaller of the two beaches. When surfing at Doonloughan, it is essential to respect the locals and adhere to surf etiquette, especially in crowded conditions. Always assess your skill level against the difficulty of the waves before entering the water. Check the surf forecast and report for optimal conditions, and consider using a surf map or webcam to gather additional information about the spot. Respect the locals.
