Overview
About this Spot
Old Pier beach is a surf spot located in Tasmania, Australia. This spot is known for its excellent left-hand point break on sand, making it a regional classic for surfers of all levels. The beach faces north/northeast and is best surfed when the North Coast is maxed out on a large northwest swell or on a 1.5m+ northeast swell. The waves at Old Pier beach rarely break, and when they do, they are less than 50 meters in length. The beach has two main surf spots. On a big day, waves break behind the mermaids off a reef and peel all the way down the beach to the second section, where most surfers ride. The second section is surfed right next to a rocky island and continues through the pier. The best time to surf is about three hours after high tide, during low and medium tides. In summer, the beach receives more northeast swells, which are the best swell direction, while in winter, the sand shifts and westerly swells become prominent. Offshore winds can be too strong at times, making it difficult to catch a wave. Summer is generally the only crowded time of the year, with few surfers present otherwise. It’s important to check the surf forecast and report before heading out to ensure the conditions are suitable. Access to the beach is easy; drive along the main street at Bridport, turn right at Bentley Street, and continue driving until you find it. When surfing at Old Pier beach, be aware of rips, undertow, and man-made dangers such as buoys. Localism can be an issue, so it’s crucial to respect the locals and follow surf etiquette, especially in crowded spots. Always check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Respect the locals.
