Overview
About this Spot
Red Banks is a surf spot located in South Australia, Australia. This spot is known for its right-hand waves breaking over a coral reef. The waves here are typically less than 50 meters in length and are best suited for intermediate surfers. Red Banks is a fickle spot, rarely breaking, but when conditions align, it offers quality waves. The ideal conditions include a clean long-period swell of about 6 meters, producing 2-4 foot waves, with a northwest wind on a mid-tide. The spot features two reefs, with the one directly out front being the preferred option. It resembles a mini ‘shark island’ setup, with a slab over a shallow reef that barrels to the right. Surfers should be cautious of rips and undertows, as well as the presence of sharks in the area. Access to Red Banks is via a short dirt track off the Eyre Highway, about 5 kilometers north of Arno Bay. The spot is relatively uncrowded, providing an opportunity for surfers to enjoy the waves without much competition. However, it’s important to do your homework and check the surf forecast and report before heading out, as the spot requires a bit of luck with the conditions. Make sure to check your skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions match your surfing level. Respect the locals and always be mindful of surf etiquette, especially when the spot is crowded.
