About this Spot

Moana Beach is a surf spot located in South Australia, Australia. It is situated in the suburb of Moana, approximately 36.4 km south of Adelaide, within the City of Onkaparinga. The beach is accessible by main roads, making it easy to reach from Adelaide. Moana Beach is known for its sandy bottom with some rocky areas, providing both left and right waves suitable for surfers of all levels. The waves break at all tides and have a regular frequency, with lengths ranging from 50 to 150 meters. The spot can get crowded, so it’s important to check the surf etiquette when surfing here. Parking is available near the boardwalk, which is recommended as the best waves are straight down from it. Near the boardwalk, you can find nice right-handers, while surfing straight out from the surf life saving club offers good lefties. It’s advisable to head out to the back set for a better ride, as other sets may break over you. Moana Beach is considered beginner-friendly and not particularly dangerous, although there are reports of blue-ringed octopus in the rock pools, which are generally not a concern for surfers. The beach is patrolled by the Moana Surf Life Saving Club during the summer, ensuring safety for beachgoers. Facilities at the beach include a bar, barbecue areas, and toilets. Moana Beach is one of the few beaches in Adelaide where vehicles can be driven onto the sand, making it a popular spot for families and tourists. Nearby surf spots include Seaford Reef, 3 Poles Reef, Southport, Gull Rock, and Brighton. The beach is part of the Tjilbruke Dreaming Trail, with historical significance to the Kaurna people, the traditional owners of the land. The area is divided by Pedler Creek and features a sand dune reserve. Moana Beach is a great spot for surfing, but always remember to check your skills before paddling out to ensure the conditions match your level. Respect the locals.
