Overview
About this Spot
Wedge is a surf spot located in Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, USA Northeast. The surf spot provides left waves. It’s situated off the south inlet jetty in North Assateague, Maryland. The spot is known for its left-breaking waves that can offer rides of up to 100 yards. Wedge operates best at high tide, and northwest winds are favorable, creating offshore conditions. The optimal swell direction is from the northeast, and it can handle swells from 2 feet up. While the spot can work on south swells, it can also handle north winds. Accessing Wedge typically requires paddling across the inlet from Ocean City’s fishing harbor, as it’s within a wildlife sanctuary and not accessible by land. The spot features a bottom of rocks and sand and can break at all tides. It’s suitable for surfers of all experience levels and sometimes breaks with waves ranging from 50 to 150 meters in length. The area is generally consistent and rarely crowded, providing a more secluded surfing experience. However, strong currents and boat traffic can make the paddle hazardous, so caution is advised. When surfing Wedge, be aware of potential hazards such as urchins, rips, undertow, and sharks. The spot is mainly frequented by experienced local surfers, with few visitors. To reach Wedge, take Route 50 West from Ocean City, go over the OC bridge, and look for signs to Shantytown. Explore the area to find a safe place to paddle out. The paddle can take about 2 minutes on a good day. Be cautious of the Coast Guard, who may issue fines, and watch for fast-moving boats. Once across, walk along the channel eastward for about a quarter mile to find the jetty. Wedge can offer protection from northeast wind swells. When the waves are smaller, it provides a fun, longboard-style left that doesn’t close out. In bigger surf conditions, it can become very hollow and offer up sections. About 200 yards down from the jetty, there’s another break with good left and right waves. Always check the surf forecast and report before heading out. Remember to respect the locals and follow surf etiquette, especially if the spot gets crowded. Check your skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions match your surfing level. Nearby surf spots include 48th Street, Ocean City, Assateague, Fenwick Island, and Hollywood St.
