Overview
About this Spot
Bondi Beach is a surf spot located in New South Wales, Australia, about 7 kilometers east of downtown Sydney. The beach is around 1 kilometer long and faces southeast. The spot is known for its sand and rock bottom and can be surfed at all tides. The northern end of Bondi Beach is best for beginners and children, with smaller and gentler waves, while the southern end usually has bigger surf that suits more advanced surfers. The spot is very crowded, both in and out of the water, with surfers of all levels using a mix of boards including softboards, shortboards, mid-lengths, retro boards, and longboards. The spot provides both left and right waves. Bondi Beach is exposed to swells from the east, southeast, and south, and the best wind direction is from the west, northwest, or north. The minimum swell height for decent surf is about 2 feet. The beach often has waves even when other Sydney beaches are flat, but the sandbanks can be inconsistent, and sometimes the waves close out. During summer, the water is warmer and the surf is usually smaller, making it more accessible for everyone. Hazards include strong rip currents, especially at the southern end, and the presence of sharks. Always check your skills before paddling out, be sure that the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Respect the locals, especially when the spot is crowded, and make sure to follow surf etiquette. The local surf community is active, and surf life-saving clubs have a long history at Bondi. Nearby surf spots include North Bondi, South Bondi, The Boot, Tamarama, and Tama Reef.
