Overview
About this Spot
Blacksmiths Beach is a surf spot located in New South Wales, Australia, within the coastal suburb of Blacksmiths, part of the City of Lake Macquarie. The beach is adjacent to the Pacific Ocean and is approximately 24 kilometers south of Newcastle’s central business district, nestled between the suburbs of Belmont and Swansea. Blacksmiths Beach is known for its sandy bottom and provides both left and right waves, making it accessible for surfers of all levels. The waves are generally of normal quality and are best surfed at medium tide. The surf spot is characterized by its regular frequency, with wave lengths typically less than 50 meters. While the beach is often empty, surfers should always check the surf etiquette when surfing crowded spots. The breakwall at the entrance to Lake Macquarie can offer two waves during a good swell of 6-8 feet, one in the channel and another beside the wall, though the waves can be inconsistent. Local surfers often prefer this side of the channel, considering it a better break than nearby spots like Frenchmans Reef and Caves. Blacksmiths Beach is part of the southern section of Nine Mile Beach and is near the Blacksmiths Nature Reserve. Surfers can reach the beach by driving to the surf life saving club and walking from there. It’s important to check your skills before paddling out to ensure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. The beach is in proximity to other surf spots such as Maneela, Moon Island, Frenchmans Reef, Crabbes Creek, and Frenchmans Beach. Respect the locals.
