Overview
About this Spot
Hearns is a surf spot located in New South Wales, Australia. This beach offers a unique surfing experience with its sand bottom and regular wave frequency. The spot is suitable for surfers of all levels, from beginners to experienced riders. The waves at Hearns are less than 50 meters in length, providing a manageable challenge for those looking to improve their skills. The beach is known for its quiet atmosphere, as it is not directly surrounded by many houses, making it a peaceful spot to catch some waves. However, on a good day, it can become quite crowded, so it’s important to check the surf etiquette when surfing crowded spots. Access to the beach is convenient, especially if you have a 4×4 vehicle, as you can drive onto the beach and park close to the break. The spot is ideal for shortboards, but when the swell isn’t up, longboards can also be a great choice. Bodyboarding is popular here, although the waves can be powerful when big. There are a couple of small rips, and the beach is unpatrolled, so it’s advisable to go out with a local if you’re not experienced. The reef at Hearns is not always good or safe, but when it is, it’s best accessed by climbing off the rocks of Flattop, which is only accessible at low tide. Flattop Island is walkable at low tide and offers a great view. Geographically, Hearns is located near Coffs Harbour, and you can reach it by traveling up the Pacific Highway for about 25-30 kilometers. Follow the directions to Sandy Beach, and you’ll find Hearns Lake Rd, which leads you to the spot. Remember to respect the locals who have been surfing both sides of the island for many years. Always check your skills before paddling out to make sure the spot and conditions fit your surfing level. Respect the locals.
