About this Spot

Jones Beach is a surf spot located in New South Wales, Australia, specifically in the Illawarra and South Coast regions. Also known as Boyds Beach, it faces the Tasman Sea and is situated east of Kiama Downs, approximately 2 kilometers south by east of Minnamurra. The beach stretches about 900 meters between Minnamurra Point, a 30-meter high headland, and the basalt columns of the southern Cathedral Rocks. This east-facing white sand beach is known for its consistent waves, averaging 1 to 1.5 meters, which create a single bar typically cut by six rips, with the northern rip being stronger. Rocks are present in the surf towards the southern end, and the beach features both sand and rock bottoms. The wave direction offers both left and right waves, making it suitable for intermediate surfers. The beach is relatively empty, providing a less crowded surfing experience. Facilities at the beach include wheelchair-accessible toilets, limited shaded picnic areas, and bicycle racks, but pets, glass or bottles, firearms, and jet skis are not allowed. Surfing competitions are held between February and October, with a special one-on-one competition in November. The northern end of Jones Beach has a nice left that can work well, although the banks are constantly changing, so both ends can be surfed. Localism is present, especially when the waves are working, so it’s important to be respectful and share the waves. Before heading out, check your skills to ensure the spot and conditions match your surfing level. Always adhere to surf etiquette, especially in crowded spots. Respect the locals.
